“How Are You Doing This?” The Question That Started It All

Every time I shared a little of what my son was doing, the same question rolled in. People wanted to know how he could read and spell so well so young, and how on earth I was teaching him to do it.

To me, honestly, it felt basic. It was just the natural way I’d been going about it. But the more people asked, the more I realized that what felt obvious to me wasn’t obvious to everyone, and a lot of parents genuinely didn’t know where to begin. So I decided to build something that could hand my method to them in a way that actually made sense.

The Simple Shift That Made It Click

Here’s what I was doing, and it really is simpler than it sounds.

My son is five, and he reads and spells well. While we were working through a spelling program, it struck me that as he was learning his phonic sounds, I could teach him to spell at the very same time. The sounds he was learning to read were the same sounds he needed to write a word, so I brought the two together instead of treating them as separate lessons. It worked beautifully. He wasn’t memorizing spelling lists so much as learning to hear a word and know the sounds that build it.

That’s the whole heart of Spelling by Sound. Rather than rote memorization, a child learns to listen to a word, catch each sound inside it, and put those sounds down on paper.
