My Son Struggled With Self-Control. So Did I.

My son knew his Scripture. He could recite it word for word. But knowing the words and understanding them turned out to be two different things, and nowhere was that clearer than with self-control.

His temper would flare, the meltdowns came fast, and the verses he could quote so easily didn’t seem to reach him in those moments. Here’s the part I have to be honest about, though: he wasn’t the only one struggling. When his frustration rose, mine often rose right along with it. I’d feel my own anger climbing in the very moments I was asking him to stay calm.

That’s when it hit me. This couldn’t be something I built for him while standing outside of it. We both needed it.

Why We Built It

I didn’t set out to create a program. I set out to help my child, and somewhere in the middle of it, to help myself too.

Self-control wasn’t just his lesson to learn. It was ours. So I built something we could do together, where God’s Word set the standard for the whole family and we held each other accountable to it. He needed to understand what God says about self-control beyond just Mummy and Daddy telling him to calm down, and I needed the same reminder in my own heart when my patience ran thin.

That’s really the heart of Scripture Character Development. It isn’t about fixing a child while the adults look on. It’s about a family growing in something together and keeping each other honest along the way.

More Than a Memory Verse

Here’s what makes this different from handing a child a verse and hoping it sticks.

It takes one trait, self-control to start, and walks all the way from hearing what God says about it to actually living it out when it counts. There’s real meaning behind the words so they aren’t hollow, real practice so it becomes a skill instead of a rule, and it’s built to meet you in the actual moments where self-control is hardest. The growth happens in real life, in the flares and the hard mornings, for the child and the grown-up alike.

You Don’t Need to Homeschool to Use It

This started in our homeschool, but it was never meant to live only there.

Every family has something to grow in, and self-control might be one of the most universal.
